She turned onto her back and studied the ceiling to keep from looking at him, though she ached for him to reach for her and hold her. Her heart began to beat in her throat and wrists. This sudden disconnect after their shared intimacy was like having a strip of her skin ripped off. “Are you going to spend the night?”

“It might not be a good idea for the girls to see me asleep in your bed since your in-laws are coming tomorrow.”

Though his reasoning was sound, it still hurt. “You’re probably right.” She brushed her hair away from her face. What went wrong? Was he always like this after sex? She remembered shared moments of humor, and the high of being together, not this…distance.

“I’ll be right back.” He rose and went into her bathroom. The toilet flushed, and water ran.

As she lay there, the fleeting thought that this might be some kind of payback for her breaking things off years before flitted through her mind.

Bowie had never been divisive or underhanded. Never cruel.

Then what happened just now?

When he came to the door, she waited for him to come back to the bed, but he continued to stand in the doorway, his gaze focused on her, his expression shuttered. She hadn’t felt naked until that moment. Turning her back to him, she rose and reached for the robe hung on her closet door, quickly slipped it on, and cinched the belt.

“You need to tell me why you broke it off. What your father used against you to make you do it.”

Silence stretched while she attempted to shift gears to the last thing she wanted to talk about after making love with him. And how was she supposed to tell him the worst of it? It had been her fault his brother was beaten nearly to death. It was a miracle he’d lived.

Bowie’s mother had screamed at her and blamed her before she hit her father up for a fat paycheck to keep from turning Matt into the police.

She told him what she could. “Harry had Matt video us having sex, then threatened to have you arrested for statutory rape.”

His lips parted in surprise. “You’d reached the age of consent, Alayna. That’s why we waited so long, so the charges would never have stuck.”

“Matt changed the date on the video. You were nineteen, I was seventeen, but the new date made it look like I was sixteen at the time. That difference in your age and mine for those few months meant the difference between consent and statutory rape. You’d have gone to jail and come out either in a body bag or as a registered sex offender. Harry would have found a way to make it happen. Your life would have been over.”

She shifted, glanced away, then back at him. “Even if the charges didn’t stick… You worked so hard to get your GPA up to qualify for a scholarship and financial aid.
